The Ark Veterinary Hospital is capable of treating different forms of cancer, depending on your pet's diagnosis. We always discuss the various treatments available, as well as their costs. Not all cancers respond to chemotherapy, but many will respond with appropriate treatment.

We consult with a variety of oncology specialists. We can also make referrals to a specialist if we feel it is in your pet's best interest. Unlike humans, pets undergoing chemotherapy do not become ill or lose all their hair. Chemotherapy is usually well tolerated by pets, so never dismiss it should the need arises.

Chemotherapy is an effective treatment for many types of cancer in dogs and cats. Our goal is always to improve the health and quality of life for our patients and we never want the treatment to be worse than the disease. Many forms of cancer are incurable, but chemotherapy can often prevent or reduce the severity of symptoms and add quality time to your pet's life.

Will chemotherapy make my pet suffer?

Many pet owners initially hesitate about chemotherapy as they don’t want their animal to suffer severe side effects. Fortunately, most dogs and cats tolerate chemotherapy considerably better than humans.

While side effects, as described below, are always a possibility, the primary goal of chemotherapy is to preserve the pet’s quality of life for as long as possible.

We treat cancer aggressively but never at the expense of quality of life. If a pet starts to experience significant side effects, we alter our treatment plan.
